There is a version of experience that becomes a liability. It accumulates not as wisdom but as assumption — a growing list of things you believe you already know, which quietly narrows the range of things you are willing to consider. I have met many people in business who are, in this sense, prisoners of their own track record.
Building fresh — genuinely fresh, not just rebranded — requires a particular discipline. It means being willing to set aside the reflexes that made you competent in one context and ask whether they serve you in another. It means being honest about what the market needs from you now, rather than what it once rewarded.
What experience actually gives you
After years working across Turkish and European business — energy, real estate, financial services — I came to understand that the most transferable thing is not sector knowledge. It is judgment about people and about risk. The ability to read a situation and understand where the real uncertainty lies. The ability to know, early, whether a partnership has the conditions to work or not.
That kind of judgment does not reset when you start something new. But it needs to be applied with humility. Because building fresh also means accepting that you are, in certain respects, starting again. The relationships, the reputation, the operating infrastructure — all of it has to be re-earned in the new context.
Demiroren Investments is that fresh start for me. It is a deliberate construction: small, selective, independently minded, and unconstrained by legacy structures or inherited obligations. The things I am bringing to it are the things I have tested over a long time and found genuinely useful — patience, rigour, a preference for substance over signalling.
Why smaller is often better
One of the clearest things I have learned is that the best work happens at a scale where you can stay close to what matters. Large organisations develop momentum, but they also develop distance — between decision-makers and the actual assets, partners, and operational realities that determine whether investments succeed or fail.
Operating a smaller, more focused platform allows a different quality of attention. You see more, you decide more carefully, and you are more willing to say no — because every commitment matters more. That selectivity is not a limitation. It is the point.
Building fresh, for me, means choosing that quality of engagement over the scale that might look more impressive from the outside. It means being willing to grow slowly, in exchange for growing well.
